KIM
CASEBEER
Oil/Pastel
Landscape-indoor/outdoor
March 16-19, 2022
Tuition $695
Confident Color in the Landscape
Choosing color can seem like a mystery to a beginning
landscape painter. Beginning painters paint “what they know.” For
example, painting a tree trunk brown because they believe it to be so.
Students need to get past painting what they know and get to painting
what they really see. To do this, we start by going outside to gather
information. Our plein airs are our color notes. We will spend about
half of the workshop outside studying the landscape to gain color
knowledge. Photos do not give us accurate color and usually show the
value of color as extremes where darks are black and lights are white.
Students will work on value, color temperature, color intensity and
relativity to gain a better understanding of what they see.
Back in the studio, we will revisit what inspired us to
paint a particular scene. Concentrating on this one idea will help you
through the painting process. The foundation of a strong design will
make a strong painting. Students will use drawing exercises such as
notans and value sketches in order to experiment with composition. We
will keep our plein airs close to remind us of the light, atmosphere and
excitement of the outdoor experience.
Kim will give pointers on how to proceed and visit with
each student before moving on to their studio piece. Kim will offer
demonstrations in both pastel and oil, and offer one-on-one help at your
easel. We will also conclude most painting days with a group discussion
in a positive environment so that we can learn from each other’s work.

Kim Casebeer was born and raised in Kansas on a family
farm. As part of a fourth generation farm family, she has been
connected to the land for a long time. Kim still lives in Kansas and
draws her inspiration from the simplicity of the Flint Hills, an area of
wide open ranch land. “It’s a simple landscape,” she says. “You have
to spend some time and let it speak to you.” These days Kim travels to
paint throughout the United States. “I think the simplicity of the
Kansas landscape has helped me find the essence of other places. I’m
able to focus on what’s important in a composition.”
Kim received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State
University in 1992. She worked as a graphic designer and art director,
while spending evenings and weekends painting until 2002, when she was
able to make the leap to full-time artist. Kim has continued to study
with artists such as Albert Handell, W. Scott Jennings, Michael
Albrechtsen, Scott Christensen and Matt Smith.
Kim’s work has been featured in numerous nationally recognized magazine

DENNIS
SHEEHAN
LANDSCAPE
Indoor/Outdoor
May
7-10, 2022
Tuition $800
We will explore
the main aspects of what constitutes tonalist painting. The focus will
be on Chroma mainly, but emphasis also on Values and use of the Gray
scale, with close proximity of mid range tones.
Also, how to
interpret plein air sketching in keeping with these precepts.
Students may
bring any and all painting tools they are comfortable with, but oil
paints work the best with my process. Canvas pads and panels at fine
also.
Dennis has
work in major public and private collections, including the White House.
Sheehan evokes the artistic sensibility and emotional impact of 19th
century American Tonalist landscape painters. His poetic landscapes
favor Nature’s transitional moments — the breathtaking effects of dusk,
dawn, and the stillness before storms. He builds his compositions by
tonal contrast and translates value relationships into color
relationships. In this way, nothing is arbitrary: the paintings exude a
sense of organic correctness. Looking at his work, we sense a satisfying
“rightness” to his choices.
In his own
words, Sheehan notes, “My goal is to have the painting emanate light,
rather than be just a surface that records the reflections of light.
This is why shadow areas are important, for it is from them that this
emanation proceeds. The light areas are focal points of the effort, but
the power comes from the shadows.”
Not
surprisingly, his method gives darks pre-eminence: he starts with darks
and in a subtractive process, removes pigment to reveal subtle
gradations of light. “I study Rembrandt as much as I study trees… and
like Rembrandt, I find drama in the darks as they articulate lights.” He
aims for an emotional response in the viewer, and strives to imbue his
landscapes with the same expressiveness found in Old Master portraits.
Sheehan’s extensive use of glazes also enhances the expressive effect,
and brings a glowing dimensionality to his surfaces.

Capturing Character in the
Portrait With Chantel
We all want to loosen our
paintings. Regardless of whether you work in acrylic or oil, values are
the foundation. Everything is made up of patterns of value shapes. This
comprehensive four day workshop is designed to focus on using these
values to create looser portrait paintings. Chantel will share tips and
techniques learned from over twenty-five years of working in the acrylic
medium. Her gentle teaching style will enrich the painting skills of
beginners and advanced artists alike as she demonstrates painting the
portrait from reference photos, without losing the energy and vitality
of working from life.
Chantel will also demonstrate
painting the portrait from a model and share valuable insight into the
differences between working from life versus photos.
Students will learn: essential
materials and how to use them, what photographs make the best references
for portrait painting, editing (what you leave out is just as important
as what you keep in), color mixing tips, and how to recognize value
patterns and use them. Students will also learn the importance of
edges when loosening up your painting. Students are may bring their own
photographs and Chantel will have some on hand if needed.
Chantel will work in acrylics

Chantel’s passion for art began flourishing at age 12 when she was
mentored under local San Diego artists. She continued to study art,
largely self-taught, while living in Newport, Rhode Island and Keflavik,
Iceland. While enrolled in a college art course, a fellow student
introduced her to acrylic paints, and she soon found it to be a medium
dominated by abstract art. But her first love was portraiture for which
she found little advice. As she dreamed of perfecting her skills as an
acrylic portrait artist, Chantel continued to learn from professional
oil painters and translated their teachings into acrylic techniques. All
the while, she remained active in local art communities, including
serving as President of Artists’ Link in Memphis, Tennessee.
In
2006, Chantel opened her own art business called Chantel's Originals
near Memphis Tennessee. Chantel soon benefited from workshops and
demonstrations with outstanding artists including Dawn Whitelaw, Michael
Shane Neil, Suzie Baker, and Marc Hanson. Chantel is currently the
National Coordinator of the State Ambassador program for the Portrait
Society of America, and is also a member of The Chestnut Group, and the
National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society.
Chantel has been featured in solo art shows and juried exhibitions. Her
award winning paintings are in private and public collections throughout
the United States and overseas. Her work is published in Acrylic
Artist magazine, American
Art Collector,
Southwest Art, The Artist’s Magazine, Fine Art
Connoisseur, International Artist and several books. She regularly
blogs at

August 10-13. 2022
Tuition $900
Class limited to
12 students.
“Art reveals the evidence of
our experiences and values. By observing and creating, the artist
suggests themes that are essential to their character and perpetuates
the making and sharing of experiences. As a result of the creative
process, subjects become significant to us in unique ways, aesthetically
and conceptually.
Through lecture and
demonstration, this workshop will reinforce the student’s understanding
of composition, form and various methods of applying paint. Students
will work on specific assignments, exploring ways of unifying,
simplifying and abstracting the subject while adding endless variety to
the marks and colors used.
Students will be shown multiple
ways of starting and building a painting (both with direct and indirect
procedures such as alla prima and glazing) and ways of simplifying their
palette preparation. This workshop inspires a more experimental
approach, discovering new tools, methods, materials, as well as in
adjusting elements of the painting, such as the value, key/color
palette, shapes and edges.

Students are
often nervous about what they don't know. However, not knowing is where
the real learning occurs. Artists educate their eyes to see beyond what
is normal. There is so much more to developing as an artist than the
craft. The most important aspect is the developed ability to see as an
artist. Becoming an artist opens up a very special relationship to the
world. One of structure symmetry, color harmony, edges, shapes and the
sensuality of paint and line. Art, the magic, the mystery come amidst a
new way of seeing and the thrill of discovery within the relationship
with your subject.

Using what she descries as a blend of expressionism and impressionism,
Anderson paints the human face, landscapes, and horses with equal skill.
"What draws me to a certain person is character more than anything," she
says. "For a while it was children, but they can be difficult to paint
without getting too cute. I try to convey a touch of humanity. I still
paint horses, too, because they have such a great form. I like doing
winter landscapes because of the abstract quality and Indian dancers
because of the color and movement. I bring something different to my
portrait work after doing landscapes. Art is all about relationships and

MICHAEL OME UNTIEDT
Nocturne Workshop-The Color of Light
Oil
October 24-27, 2022
Tuition $675
“Nocturne, a noun, is defined as
two things: first as a short composition of a romantic or dreamy
character suggestive of night, and secondly as a picture of a night
scene. I first developed interest in nocturnes in 2003 after
viewing a touring exhibit of Frederick Remington’s nocturne paintings
titled “Color of Night”. I was spellbound by this exhibit and
returned time and time again to stand in front of the paintings for
hours. On a number of occasions I was asked to leave the exhibit,
as being hypnotized by the mysterious nature of the work, I would stand
closer and closer to the paintings, trying to understand the palette and
brushwork used to affect such marvelous work, so that I would set off
“alarms” that security assured me was present to physically protect the
artwork.”
“After exposure to this life
altering exhibit, I began studying nocturne painting as exemplified by
the western painters Frederick Remington and Frank Tenney Johnson, and
the American pre impressionist James McNeil Whistler. I spent
hours either directly in front of their paintings, or studying examples
of this work in published form. I repeatedly experimented with
color choices and palette in attempts to replicate the values and colors
they used to create their nocturne work. Through trial and error I
eventually developed an understanding of how best to convey my visions
of nocturne paintings. For the past fifteen years I have done so,
striving for a mastery of the mysteries of nocturne painting.”
“In my painting workshop, “The
Colors of Night” I hope to convey these understandings to other artists
interested in developing their visions of nocturne painting. I
will rely upon lecture/demonstration about the chroma and values of
nocturne painting, as well as other elements of good painting as
exemplified by attendees work. In this workshop, I intend to not
only instruct on the principles of nocturne painting, but also on how to
take daytime (dayturne) references and reinterpret them in a nocturne or
nighttime painting. This will include a combination of on location
(plein aire) sketching creating references, and studio time developing
these references into finished nocturne work.”
“The search for excellence in
creating art is a subjective one, based on the life experiences and
perceptions of the aspiring artist. My role as art instructor is
to help that artist find their "path of best steps" to creating art,
building on personal strengths to develop an individualized creative
voice. When instructing, I emphasize high hypostasis, or “meaning” to
created work, as well as a dedication on the learner’s part to elevate
their levels of personal perceptual abilities. My teaching
is directed towards individualized guidance based on individual learner
needs. Because of the importance I place on the “meaning” behind an
ART-i-fact, and the role of heightened PERCEPTIONS in the creation of
art, I work with learners in any medium and skill level.”
“In all my workshops I try and
maintain a nurturing, safe, fun learning environment. I believe
critique, individualized instruction, and problem solving demonstration
to be strong teaching aides. I also believe a lot of art learning takes
place in informal social settings after the workshop day is over, so I
hang around!”

CHARLIE HUNTER
Composition and
Values in Plein air Painting
November 1-4, 2022
Tuition $900
Class Limited to 12
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
“Color gets the
credit, but value does the work!” It’s
a phrase you have probably heard before, but what does it mean? During
this intensive four-day workshop, dive into the world of values and
composition with master artist Charlie Hunter.
We will focus on how to build stronger
paintings through values, edges, drawing and composition -rather than
color. We will paint landscapes from life, and also explore an
often-overlooked step that pays off in spades - creating drawings, from
life or personal photographs, and using those drawings to create
memorable and dynamic paintings. By simplifying forms and emphasizing
composition, your work can take on a power that will truly make it stand
out.
Multiple demos by Hunter will show how he goes about
creating his award-winning work. Students are sure to leave this class
laughing, challenged, and armed with an arsenal of pointers and tools to
strengthen their painting and create the best work of their life.
STATEMENT:
I strive for my paintings to reside in an
uneasy calm, half way between a photograph and a memory. The work of
photographers such as Dorothea Lange or Walker Evans resonate in manner
similar, yet distinctively different than -say- the paintings of Edward
Hopper, Joseph Stella or Franz Kline. All, however, coexist in our
collective visual language.
I use a variety of moderately unorthodox
techniques, such as manipulating paint with a window washer’s squeegee
to achieve a suite of effects or impressing the pattern of paper towels
into a painted surface to evoke the halftone screens and ben-day dots of
classic photographic reproduction. I want these to be noted, almost
subconsciously, by the viewer. Concurrently, the thin, semi-transparent
paint film allows for somewhat random mark-making to appear almost
photographic in detail.
The limited palette, near monochromatic
nature of my paintings are, I hope, somewhat analogous to the
stripped-down writing approach of a Raymond Carver or Ernest Hemingway,
attempting to eschew extra verbiage for imagery that is pared down to
sinew and bone.

Charlie
Hunter’s distinctive limited-chroma paintings have won wide renown for
their distinct, evocative sense of place. Combining spare, elegant
draftsmanship and haunting atmospherics, Hunter’s works evoke both the
worlds of Hopper and Kline, Sheeler and Keifer.
After emerging on the national scene in
2012 with a feature in PLEIN AIR, Hunter has quickly leapfrogged to the
forefront of that world, routinely winning awards at plein air events
around the country.
His work is now appearing with
increasing frequency in museums and larger art shows. Collectors include
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and Tampa Bay football player Logan Mankins. He
has curated the traveling exhibition BOXCARS: RAILROAD IMAGERY IN
CONTEMPORARY REALISM, in partnership with the Center for Railroad
Photography and Art.
Hunter grew up in small-town New
Hampshire and Vermont, and often returns to the themes of rural
deindustrialization in his work. His studio, appropriately, is in the
former mill town of Bellows Falls, Vermont, which provides almost
unlimited subject matter, though he is also fond of decrepitude wherever
it may be found across America.
His work has been published in numerous
publications including Southwest Art Magazine; Landscapes In Oil,Ken
Salaz, Monacelli Press, 2019; Rule Breaking Landscapes, Streamline Art
Videos, 2019, among others.

DANIEL
GERHARTZ
PORTRAIT-Training The Eye To See
November 7-10,2022
Tuition $1,400
The focus of this workshop is
on training yourself to see accurate relationships and record them in
the process of portrait painting. Dan will demonstrate two
portraits in differing lighting situations. He will lead
discussion using slides of masterworks to demonstrate principles of
accurate edge control. value control and color temperature.
Students paint a variety of models in these same lighting situations
each day throughout the workshop. During painting time Dan
will teach and critique as you are working. The week will end with
some discussion of how he develops a larger composition with a figure in
a studio/still life piece and students hace the same model and set up
for the full day of painting and the opportunity to work through some of
those principles.

Daniel began his art education at the American Academy of Art in Chicago
where he studied in the classical tradition and immersed himself in
applications of technique and design. After a brief stint in commercial
art, he began pursuing fine art; visiting museums to study master works
and painting alongside contemporary artists. Daniel found his passion
in painting from life. This direct approach to working with the figure
and the landscape allows him to see and attempt to capture the infinite
nuances of light, color, and form. This continues to drive his
enthusiasm today.
The artist’s skillful and technically adept work
celebrates the created world, the human form, personal relationships
with a connection to landscapes and environments of special importance.
Many of his figures are dressed in dramatic clothing which he often
chooses for its aesthetic appeal and lyrical quality so as to achieve a
sense of other worldliness. His sense of intimacy and honesty with
regard to his subjects are a direct result of his closeness and
proximity to his family and friends.
Emotions are a vital part of his express design,
while his mastery of anatomy, the human form and complex surfaces
combine to make his canvases very powerful visual experiences.
Dan’s work has been featured
in numerous national invitational exhibitions as well as in public and
private collections nationwide. He has been featured in solo and group
shows across the country and has won several awards at prominent
national invitational exhibitions and his work has been collected both
nationally and internationally.
