Tom left the avionics' field over
25 years ago to pursue a career in art. He says he has never looked back
and is so thankful to be able to do what he loves. The first few years
watercolor was his medium and then he moved to oils which became his
passion. His method of study is a combination of analyzing the old
masters, taking workshops, pouring over his large collection of art books
and more recently art DVD’s. He keeps his drawing skills honed by
attending weekly drawing sessions.
His paintings are hard to ignore,
they are masterfully painted with expressive brushstrokes and exciting
edges. His work has that timeless quality and on close examination, there
is no weakness to be found.

JACQUELINE KAMIN
Still Life
January 17 - 21, 2011
Tuition $525
Jacqueline Kamin describes the process of
painting a still life as “one of assembling pieces of a puzzle that
expressed a concept about the light, form and intrigue inherent in
beautiful objects.” She is a master of this particular puzzle. Most well
known for her still life paintings, Jacqueline also paints seductive tonal
landscapes rooted in her eastern background. “An artist’s work is to
reflect the culture of his time, and so creating art enables one to make
discoveries about the wonder of nature and the dignity and nobility of
man. These are given order by art, which enables the viewer to see and
understand life with greater depth. Beauty generally results from this
order, but is never the primary aim, for not all great painting is
beautiful.”
“I am constantly looking for new
relationships among objects, as well as new forms of color. Paintings show
us things in our environment that we may overlook or ignore, and I try to
make the world around us come alive, as a rich, beautiful and exciting
place.”
Beginner to advanced students are welcomed
to Kamin’s class. The class will focus on painting the still life. A
subject that forces the student to analyze what he or she is seeing in
terms of color, value, line, edges and paint quality. Learning to paint is
learning to see in a particular way considering all the elements of
composition and concept. She will demonstrate through two paintings where
she explains what she is observing about her subject, and how she can
interpret it through this language of painting.

This class will focus on the art of "The Still Life" with an emphasis
on florals. From the moment of conception to the finish, Robbins will

melody just as there is rhythm to a painting" says Robbins. Student
will gain a better understanding of composition, temperature changes,
color harmony, atmosphere, and the importance of lost and found edges.

CAROLYN
ANDERSON
Oil & pastel
Figure / Portrait
January 31-February 4, 2011
Tuition $695+ model fee
Explore the qualities of composition, value, and color, with an emphasis on the
use of contrast, rhythm, and edges. Learn to interpret the subject matter and to
enjoy the challenge and spontaneity of alla prima painting. Subjects will
include live models. There will be daily demonstrations, a slide presentation,
and as much individual instruction as possible.
Using what she descries as a blend of expressionism and impressionism, Anderson
paints the human face, landscapes, and horses with equal skill. "What
draws me to a certain person is character more than anything," she says.
"For a while it was children, but they can be difficult to paint without
getting too cute. I try to convey a touch of humanity. I still paint horses,
too, because they have such a great form. I like doing winter landscapes because
of the abstract quality and Indian dancers because of the color and movement. I
bring something different to my portrait work after doing landscapes. Art is all
about relationships and perspective."

MICHAEL
ALBRECHTSEN
Oil
Plein Air Landscape / Studio
March 21 - 25,2011
Tuition $575
Whatever the subject
might be, his works show a quiet, sure mastery of medium, composition, color,
and lighting – so subtly balanced that the viewer all but bypasses the surface
of the canvas, tapping directly into the emotions Albrechtsen is trying to
convey.
When describing Michael’s work, a fellow artist said, "He uses his keen
sense of color to set mood; his paintings appear to have pure, glowing light, as
though they are drenched in sunlight, without appearing forced or artificial. He
has an expressive storytelling ability."
This class will focus on transferring what you photographed to your canvas, and
still capture the emotion and color of the real life image. Many times we find
it hard to get colors true to life, and we lose the emotion when we work from a
photograph. This class will start out taking photos and then painting from the
photos you take. This class will have a strong emphasis on emotion, color, and
composition, and how to make a dull photo into a colorful piece of artwork. We
will learn how to sharpen our skills or observation by looking around us and
transferring all we see and feel to the canvas.
Demonstrations will be given as well as a slide presentation. We will also be
using critiques to help us learn as much as possible. Please bring your camera

Sculpture In Oil-Based Clay
March 21- 25, 2011
Tuition $ 525 + Model Fee
This class will focus on artistic expression in the form of sculpture.
We will sculpt a portrait bust of live models in oil-based clay,
beginning with a simple armature (support structure) and the application of the
clay to the armature. Mr Sundt will
instruct students on the techniques of using proportional calipers to enlarge or
diminish measurements of the subjects being sculpted, and finally, a
demonstration on the use of various tools available to sculptors that will
produce certain textures and details. The
class will primarily concentrate on learning the mechanics of the sculpting
process, but he will help students who may only have two-dimensional experience
in art to feel comfortable with the transition to a three-dimensional approach
and the handling of clay. On the
last day, a representative of Hoka Hey Foundry located near Stephenville, TX
will talk to the class about lost wax casting for those who are interested in
learning about making reproductions of their work in bronze.
He will briefly highlight mold making from an original sculpture, wax
dressing, the secondary mold investing, wax burn out, pouring of the molten
bronze into the secondary mold, metal chasing and the patina processes.
Outside of class time, Mr Sundt will give a talk about some of his
personal inspirations for his own sculpture, which he considers to be the heart

JOHN BUDICIN
Oil
Landscape, Plein Air
April 4 - 8, 2011
Tuition $ 850
This class is limited in size to allow the instructor to give more individual
attention. The essence of the workshop will be on what to look for; how to simplify and
make an exciting statement.
We will focus on starting with simple shapes, as accurately as possible, placing
the correct values and colors from the start. From this simple lay-in we will
work towards a finished painting.
"I will work and share what I have learned; my approach, what I look for,
what I utilize or omit from the scene."
"Class will begin with a short lecture and samples of my approach, as well
as some completed field studies. From there we will go directly on location and
begin painting."
"I like to work individually with each student and learn about their goals.
Then I direct them towards developing their own personal way of seeing."
"We will be painting at all times. In case of rain, students should bring
photographs or small studies to work from while indoor. What is important to me,
as a teacher, is to share whatever knowledge I have with my students. I have no
secrets about the way I paint; my philosophy or my approach. I want to give each
student all I can through personal attention, direction, and group discussions.
There are no shortcuts in reaching for our goals; just hard work and
determination. If I can help a student reach his/her goal then I have done my
job."

There is an energy, a freshness, associated
with painting from life. Painting on location- ‘plein air’- and capturing
the scene all at once-’ alla prima’- has excited artists and collectors
since the turn of the century. Jeanne Mackenzie joins a select group of
artists that share their love of nature by capturing the moment from life.
Jeanne Mackenzie’s style of painting is a blend of impressionism and
realism. Her paintings are done in oil with rich warm tones and a
painterly application. These reflect the bold light and striking contrasts
of her favorite still lifes and western landscapes.
The subject matter comes from favorite found objects, her travels,
backpacking trips with llamas or her local rural surroundings. “Painting
on location and from life really hones your powers of observation and
helps to create your own style of interpreting nature. Nature keeps me
honest and the skills learned are invaluable tools to bring back into the
studio”.
Jeanne Mackenzie is a nationally recognized artist who has been included

CHUCK
RAWLE
Oil
Plein Air Landscape / Studio
April 25-29. 2011
Tuition $525
This class will
focus on the skills to be a successful plein air painter. Many
artists insist on working from life whether they are painting still
life, figures, or landscapes. Outdoors is the best place to learn
to paint convincing landscapes. Everyone can expect to start
several small studies outdoors. Getting a quality start outdoors
is much more important than struggling with larger finished
pieces. Good starts with solid values and sensitive color are the
keys to those larger finished pieces. Because those good starts
come from good decisions at the beginning, there will be some lecture to
give you the information to make those decisions. The instructor
will demo when appropriate. Chuck’s demos will be educational,
as they are designed to illustrate a specific point.

Chuck has been
painting outdoors full time for the last 8 years. In order to
spend more time outdoors in some of America’s most beautiful places,
Chuck sold his home, bought an RV and has been RVing and painting full
time. Such a bold move enabled him to study nature
thoroughly. His paintings are internationally collected and he is
represented by six galleries from North Carolina to Idaho. He has
exhibited in numerous juried shows including the prestigious Arts for
the Parks Top 100. Chuck has been assisting Scott Christensen with
his workshops for several years and has learned a great deal from him
not only about painting, but also about teaching painting. So
bring a portable easel, an inquisitive mind, and an enthusiastic
attitude for five days of great painting.
Although Chuck
has studied extensively in workshop situations, especially at
Fredericksburg Artist School, he believes nature is the best teacher.
With his experience, he can prepare you to learn the lessons that nature
has to offer. See his work at www.chuckrawle.com

A LIFE LONG FAN OF
Will Rogers, Phil Bob mused that the cowboy humorist brought him to an
interesting artistic insight. “Art is a visual language and like story
telling, the content of the story is simply where your start. It is how
you tell the story that brings the smile, crates the mood, and evokes the
emotions.”
Phil Bob Borman has
been a professional sculptor for over 25 years. His education includes an
MFA in Art, several CA (Cowboy Artist) workshops, and studied under

NANCY
BUSH
Oil
Landscapes-indoor-limited to 8 students
July 25 -29, 2011
Pendaries, New Mexico
Tuition $750
Beautiful
black cows ,full bodied grazing sheep ,and misty, atmospheric days
populate many of the pastures of Nancy Bush’s sensitive and emotional
landscapes. The scenes depict various atmospheric scenes from around the
country and could exist anywhere that is special in your own memories.
Expressively dreamlike, they capture the chill when the sun goes behind a
cloud, the smell of a drizzling rain and the rustle of leaves shivering
in the treetops.
“The variety and vastness of the landscape can
sometimes be overwhelming, but I find myself thinking “less is more.”” Early
in her career, Bush emphasized the “more” using bright, colorful strokes alla
prima. Several years ago, she shifted to a subdued tonalist palette and a
more methodical technique was perfected. She treasures the “fleeting moments
that you get in the early mornings and late evenings. They convey more of a
mood, a feeling, because of the light”. She achieves a tranquil universality in
her paintings by melding her painted field studies and reference photographs
back in the studio. “I want viewers to feel the physicality and emotional
essence of the subject, and to find a little peace, serenity, and quiet moments
of reflection”.
This class will concentrate on light, water and
atmosphere and its play on a painting. The class will also cover how to achieve
luminosity in the painting through layering and through the application of
glazes throughout the painting process.

With a poetic economy of color and detail, Bush, a tonalist, paints low
light and close values. When nature lingers in breathless moments, she
is there to capture dusk flirting with the last blush of sunset; moon
shadows veiling dimension; or mist hushing the earth. Studies, notes
and photos from painting plein air around the country remind her
of the tones, colors, scents and feelings so she can take the entire
experience back to her studio and depict the lyrical, the profound peace
and beauty in a lonely, exquisite sense.
After
a successful business career, Nancy Bush threw herself into studying art
at a rapid pace. She attended Mission Renaissance art school in Austin,
Texas-a school dedicated to the study of the “Masters”, while also taking
many classes from Laguna Gloria Art Museum School of Art. She then began
taking many workshops throughout the United States. “My early workshop
studies were dedicated to colorful landscapes and still life, so many of
my instructors were known as colorists.” Several years later, she felt
the need to change her direction after some east coast and European
travel. Nancy became very interested in a more subdued tonalist palette
and started studying painters from the 19th and 20th
centuries such as George Inness, Isaac Levitan, Henry Twachtman, and
Russell Chatham. In the early 90’s she became familiar with the work of
Michael Workman and Scott Christensen and began to study with them
consistently for several years.
Nancy’s work is collected around the country and has been displayed in
numerous museum shows around the United States. She has been published in
numerous magazines including Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, Western Art &
Architecture, Art of the West, American Art Collector, among others.
Her work is
represented by several galleries around the country including Astoria Fine
Art-Jackson, WY; Insight Gallery-Fredericksburg, TX; Nedra Matteucci Fine Art-Santa Fe, NM and The
Sylvan Gallery-Charleston, SC See more examples of her work on her own

Painting the Figure
September 12 - 16, 2011

This class will explore the
principles of sound painting by studying drawing, values, edges, color
and design. The instructor will also pay attention to the technical
aspects of painting with lectures on process and materials. The goal of
the class will be to help artists of all levels view the subject
differently by selectively editing and incorporating sound design and
composition in order to explore each student's personal artistic
statement. The instructor will lecture and demonstrate on the process of
conveying the essence of the figure. Students will work from the live
model, focusing initially on head studies, then working towards
incorporating the entire figure in an environment, conveying mood and
atmosphere in the process. There
will be individual critiques daily.
Mr. Lorusso will incorporate how to paint from photographs using
that as additional reference when working from live models.
