DISCUSSION AND CRITIQUE
POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
John Poon began his art
career as an illustrator while living in California during the Silicon
Valley boom of the 1980’s, but his first love was always fine art
painting. “I’ve always been inspired by the landscape, by both the
intimate and grandiose.” Having recently moved from Jackson, WY to the
Ogden Valley, Utah, he’s replaced one picturesque home with another. “I
love the rural history of Utah and especially this valley where scenes of
large cottonwoods and old farms are reminiscent of a rich heritage and
cultural tradition.”
Poon’s primary focus in his painting is to convey mood through color,
brushwork, design, and light. His subjects range depending on region, but
is as well versed with boats and harbors, as with mountains and meadows.
His work speaks eloquently of nature in all its variety and wonder.
John is a sought after instructor, and his work collected by both public
institutions and private individuals throughout the country. His numerous
awards and acknowledgements include “Best of Show” The Society of Western
Artists National Juried Exhibition; “Lanscape Award of Merit” The Arts for
the Park National juried Exhibition; and most recently The Rocky Mountain
Plein Air Painters Award of Excellence
He
resides in Liberty, Ut with his wife jenny, their six kids, and Spike the
cat. John’s work can be seen on his web site at

Tom left the avionics' field over
25 years ago to pursue a career in art. He says he has never looked back
and is so thankful to be able to do what he loves. The first few years
watercolor was his medium and then he moved to oils which became his
passion. His method of study is a combination of analyzing the old
masters, taking workshops, pouring over his large collection of art books
and more recently art DVD’s. He keeps his drawing skills honed by
attending weekly drawing sessions.
His paintings are hard to ignore,
they are masterfully painted with expressive brushstrokes and exciting
edges. His work has that timeless quality and on close examination, there
is no weakness to be found.

CAROLYN
ANDERSON
Oil & pastel
Figure / Portrait
January 19-23, 2009
Tuition $625 + model fee
Explore the qualities of composition, value, and color, with an emphasis on the
use of contrast, rhythm, and edges. Learn to interpret the subject matter and to
enjoy the challenge and spontaneity of alla prima painting. Subjects will
include live models. There will be daily demonstrations, a slide presentation,
and as much individual instruction as possible.
Using what she descries as a blend of expressionism and impressionism, Anderson
paints the human face, landscapes, and horses with equal skill. "What
draws me to a certain person is character more than anything," she says.
"For a while it was children, but they can be difficult to paint without
getting too cute. I try to convey a touch of humanity. I still paint horses,
too, because they have such a great form. I like doing winter landscapes because
of the abstract quality and Indian dancers because of the color and movement. I
bring something different to my portrait work after doing landscapes. Art is all
about relationships and perspective."

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Carolyn
Anderson attended school at Illinois State University. She joined
the VISTA program (Volunteers in Service to America) in the early 70's and
was assigned to work on an Indian reservation in north central Montana and
now lives in Havre, a small community near the Canadian border.
Anderson's paintings are full of color and
expression. The focus in her work is often loosely rendered in an
almost sketch-like improvisation. The emphasis is to catch the
essence of each subject. Her subjects vary from dancers to horses to
landscapes, but she is primarily known for her portraits.
Anderson has participated in the C. M. Russell

1999 and 2000, she was awarded Jurors' Best of Show Awards, along with the
1999 Artist's Choice Award. As a member of the Western Rendezvous of

Indoor/Outdoor
March 9-13, 2009
Tuition $550
After many years of
working together on various art related projects and museum shows two
accomplished painters and instructors are going to teach their approaches
to making a painting and succeeding with your artistic goals.
John
Cosby will teach his understandable and effective limited pallet approach
in oil and Gil Dellinger will teach in pastel and acrylic, in a manner
that emphasizes tonal based mood, and the importance of drawing and value
in completing a polished work of art.
Gil and John will
be teaching outdoors with their own class and in the evening the two
groups will come together for the benefit of their combined experience.
One evening John will speak on the Ethics and Business of art from the
Artists point of view. Another Gil will speak on the curation and creation of
a theme for a show such as “Sea to Shining Sea” the museum show that
is currently traveling the U.S. Museum circuit. The two will also teach
“The Art of Self Critique” together. This is valuable knowledge for
continuing growth as an Artist. John and Gil will also demo the same
subject from their 2 different approaches so you can learn more about
individualizing your work.
This class with
these two world renown artist/teachers promises to be not just a class but
an event.
This intensive 5

About painting, Cosby says,
"While standing on location, in a place I have never visited, I begin
to recognize what is different from all the other places I have been. I
try to capture that uniqueness." As a plein-air painter Cosby travels
extensively, painting what he sees and feels everywhere he goes. A bold
use of color and an energetic brush stroke are what you will see and feel
when viewing a painting by Cosby.
Born in Hollywood, California, in
1955, Cosby was raised in the West. At an early age he began to draw and
paint and was lucky enough to have an oil painter as his Grandmother.
Cosby says, "She would give me the paint, some brushes and a scrap of
canvas and set me off to paint." This early experience "took the
fear out of creating a painting."
Cosby started traveling at a
very early age. At age 18, he was chosen as a communications advance-man
for President Nixon and began to travel the globe, continuing in this
capacity through the Ford administration. He met many interesting people
and saw many things,
but the things that most interested him were the great works of art he
encountered. "They just haunted me and helped me to set the course
for my career as a painter". After leaving the White House, Cosby
rebuilt an old classic sailing sloop designed by Nathaniel Herrishoff and,
with a friend who had dreams of being a writer, set sail, cruising up and
down the Eastern seaboard in the inland waterway for 3 years. On that
voyage, he began his art career.
"Doing drawings of anything that
moved me, things began to sell and my course was set." Upon his
return to California, Cosby began painting the sea and landscape of
Coastal California and with a strong gallery response, his success as a
painter quickly followed.
Cosby currently resides and maintains
a studio in Laguna Beach, California. He works on location around the
world and is represented by some of the finest galleries. Cosby is one of
the Founding Board Members of the prestigious Laguna Plein Air Painters
Association, an Artist member of California Art Club and an Artist member
of Oil Painters of America. In 1999, Cosby was the Chairman of the Laguna
Plein Air Painting Competition, held at the Laguna Art Museum. With his
bold contemporary style, Cosby has captured the imagination of some very
important collectors. His work can
be found in many private, public and corporate collections around the
world. Cosby is truly an internationally-known artist. See his work on his

DAVID
A. LEFFEL
Oil
Portrait / Still Life
March 16- 20, 2009
Tuition $1200
Leffel says, "Art is a delicate balance between the visual concept and the
artist’s technique. The concept (pictorial) and the technique (craft) must be
fused inextricably. The student strives to be free from painting ‘things.’
Learning all the technique in the world will not teach you to paint that which
you do not see. You can only express on canvas what you are at the time you are
painting."
This workshop will attempt to explain the "basics" for the advanced or
intermediate students. We will delve into techniques and tools, i.e., color,
value, edges, and paint quality and their relationship to the aesthetic
considerations of the surface. Concept and compositions and the artist/painter’s
psychology and its effect on one’s canvas will be possible intriguing avenues

SUNDT
Sculpture In Oil-Based Clay
March 23 - 27, 2009
Tuition $ 525 + Model Fee
This class will focus on artistic expression in the form of sculpture.
We will sculpt a portrait bust of live models in oil-based clay,
beginning with a simple armature (support structure) and the application of the
clay to the armature. Mr Sundt will
instruct students on the techniques of using proportional calipers to enlarge or
diminish measurements of the subjects being sculpted, and finally, a
demonstration on the use of various tools available to sculptors that will
produce certain textures and details. The
class will primarily concentrate on learning the mechanics of the sculpting
process, but he will help students who may only have two-dimensional experience
in art to feel comfortable with the transition to a three-dimensional approach
and the handling of clay. On the
last day, a representative of Hoka Hey Foundry located near Stephenville, TX
will talk to the class about lost wax casting for those who are interested in
learning about making reproductions of their work in bronze.
He will briefly highlight mold making from an original sculpture, wax
dressing, the secondary mold investing, wax burn out, pouring of the molten
bronze into the secondary mold, metal chasing and the patina processes.
Outside of class time, Mr Sundt will give a talk about some of his
personal inspirations for his own sculpture, which he considers to be the heart
and soul of the work. This is

This class will
focus on the skills to be a successful plein air painter. Many
artists insist on working from life whether they are painting still
life, figures, or landscapes. Outdoors is the best place to learn
to paint convincing landscapes. Everyone can expect to start
several small studies outdoors. Getting a quality start outdoors
is much more important than struggling with larger finished
pieces. Good starts with solid values and sensitive color are the
keys to those larger finished pieces. Because those good starts
come from good decisions at the beginning, there will be some lecture to

MICHAEL
ALBRECHTSEN
Oil
Plein Air Landscape / Studio
April 6 - 10, 2009
Tuition $575
Whatever the subject
might be, his works show a quiet, sure mastery of medium, composition, color,
and lighting – so subtly balanced that the viewer all but bypasses the surface
of the canvas, tapping directly into the emotions Albrechtsen is trying to
convey.
When describing Michael’s work, a fellow artist said, "He uses his keen
sense of color to set mood; his paintings appear to have pure, glowing light, as
though they are drenched in sunlight, without appearing forced or artificial. He
has an expressive storytelling ability."
This class will focus on transferring what you photographed to your canvas, and
still capture the emotion and color of the real life image. Many times we find
it hard to get colors true to life, and we lose the emotion when we work from a
photograph. This class will start out taking photos and then painting from the
photos you take. This class will have a strong emphasis on emotion, color, and
composition, and how to make a dull photo into a colorful piece of artwork. We
will learn how to sharpen our skills or observation by looking around us and
transferring all we see and feel to the canvas.
Demonstrations will be given as well as a slide presentation. We will also be
using critiques to help us learn as much as possible. Please bring your camera

There is an energy, a freshness, associated
with painting from life. Painting on location- ‘plein air’- and capturing
the scene all at once-’ alla prima’- has excited artists and collectors
since the turn of the century. Jeanne Mackenzie joins a select group of
artists that share their love of nature by capturing the moment from life.
Jeanne Mackenzie’s style of painting is a blend of impressionism and
realism. Her paintings are done in oil with rich warm tones and a
painterly application. These reflect the bold light and striking contrasts
of her favorite still lifes and western landscapes.
The subject matter comes from favorite found objects, her travels,
backpacking trips with llamas or her local rural surroundings. “Painting

helps to create your own style of interpreting nature. Nature keeps me

JOHN BUDICIN
Oil
Landscape, Plein Air (Pendaries, NM)
June 22-26, 2009
Tuition $ 850
This class is limited in size to allow the instructor to give more individual
attention. The essence of the workshop will be on what to look for; how to simplify and
make an exciting statement.
We will focus on starting with simple shapes, as accurately as possible, placing
the correct values and colors from the start. From this simple lay-in we will
work towards a finished painting.
"I will work and share what I have learned; my approach, what I look for,
what I utilize or omit from the scene."
"Class will begin with a short lecture and samples of my approach, as well
as some completed field studies. From there we will go directly on location and
begin painting."
"I like to work individually with each student and learn about their goals.
Then I direct them towards developing their own personal way of seeing."
"We will be painting at all times. In case of rain, students should bring
photographs or small studies to work from while indoor. What is important to me,
as a teacher, is to share whatever knowledge I have with my students. I have no
secrets about the way I paint; my philosophy or my approach. I want to give each
student all I can through personal attention, direction, and group discussions.
There are no shortcuts in reaching for our goals; just hard work and
determination. If I can help a student reach his/her goal then I have done my
job."

DUKE
SUNDT
Sculpture In Oil-Based Clay
August 3 - 7, 2009
Pendaries, NM
This is
optional for students to attend if they desire.

As a
sculptor with an art career spanning more than 30 years, Duke has
created bronze sculptures in a variety of subject matter ranging from
mostly western Americana to war memorials.
Well into his career, he attended an advanced sculptor’s
workshop where he was introduced to the techniques of using proportional
calipers. This tool has been
used by sculptors for hundreds of years, yet their importance somehow
escaped his college art teachers. Having
received a number of monumental commissions, many larger than life size,
his proportional calipers have become invaluable to him.
Duke’s
monumental sculptures include a 1.5 x life size Longhorn Steer for the
University of Texas at Austin. Five
soldiers representing the four major U.S. wars on the campus at New
Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., among numerous others.
His work has been featurd in New
Mexico Magazine and Western
Horseman Magazine. He is
represented by Riverbend Fine Art Gallery, in Marble Falls, TX and
Tito’s Gallery in Las Vegas, NM. Shows
he has participated in include the annual Mountain Oyster Club Show in
Tucson and his work is exhibited in numerous private collections.
